Linde represents over 135 years of innovative and technological progress. It is our inventive spirit that has taken the organization from refrigeration pioneer to international technology leader.
In 1870, young Professor Carl von Linde published his theories on refrigeration. The director of the Dreher Brewery in Vienna read the text and contacted Linde to build a refrigeration system.
Linde tested prototypes in the Spaten Brewery in Munich and developed variations until the process was ready for patenting. In 1877 Linde delivered the first refrigeration system to Dreher Brewery, which operated for 31 years in Trieste's warm and humid climate. Linde quickly found many doors opening in Europe because of the shortage of ice in the warm summers for fermentation and cooling the cellars. Subsequent orders were placed by Heineken Brewery in the Netherlands, the Danish Carlsberg Brewery, and Mainze Aktienbrauerei in Germany. The success led to the 1879 launch of the Linde Corporation to produce ice machines.
In the 2016 financial year, The Linde Group generated revenue of $17.9 bn (EUR 16.948 bn), making it one of the leading gases and engineering companies in the world, with approximately 60,000 employees working in more than 100 countries worldwide. The strategy of The Linde Group is geared towards long-term profitable growth and focuses on the expansion of its international business with forward-looking products and services.
